When it comes to excelling on the ice, having well-maintained skates is essential. Whether you’re a hockey player or a figure skater, your skates are your most important piece of performance equipment. At Rocket Skate, we understand the importance of keeping your gear in top shape. We specialize in comprehensive customer service, offering everything from skate sharpening to custom fittings and expert repairs. In this post, I’ll share practical tips and insights on fixing hockey skates, helping you extend the life of your equipment and improve your performance.

Essential Tips for Fixing Hockey Skates

Fixing hockey skates is more than just tightening laces or sharpening blades. It involves understanding the structure of your skates and knowing when and how to address common issues. Here are some key areas to focus on:

  • Blade Sharpening: A sharp blade is crucial for speed and control. We offer a specialized BFD sharpening method that enhances your skating experience by providing a precise edge that only a skilled operator on a commercial machine can create.

  • Boot Fitting: Over time, the boot can develop cracks, loose stitching, or worn padding. Repairing these issues promptly prevents discomfort and further damage.

  • Holder and Runner Maintenance: The holder, (the plastic part attaching the blade to the boot) and runner (the blade itself) need regular inspection. Loose rivets or damaged holders can affect stability and potentially create a catastrophic failure.

  • Eyelet Repairs: Broken eyelets should be replaced immediately. Continued skating with a missing eyelet can cause the eyestay to stretch or even tear. This creates a much more expensive repair.

Taking care of these components regularly will keep your skates performing at their best.

Skate Maintenance Tips

If you want to maximize the life of your skates, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Remove your skates from your bag take out the insoles

Taking out your insoles allows the skate to dry. Allowing moisture trapped in your bag can also prevent drying. This causes prelature damage to the boot liner, eyelets and the steel rivets that connect the blade holder to the boot.

  2. Don't leave your skates in a hot car

In summer months the temperature of a car can be high enough to activate an accidental heat-fit which can change the shape of the boot. Most skates are limited to 3 heat-fits and all skates should rest for 24 hours after a heat fit or they will be prone to premature breakdown.

  3. The Tendon guard is not a handle

The tendon guard (that thing on the back of the skate) is a weak spot on pretty much every skate on the market. If you're using it as a handle to take off your you're at risk of breaking it off. If you're in a True skate, it can be easily repaired. If not, it's generally not repairable.

  4. Beware of the fan in your locker

If you have a locker with a fan, beware that many of these use ozone to sterilize your gear. Ozone is very harsh on textiles and will disintegrate with prolonged usage.
